A university official said the name will be retired.
The school has not officially announced the name change, but the university is expected to announce it in the coming weeks.
The university announced the naming changes in an email to members of the Texas A & M Board of Regents.
The announcement was made at a meeting on Thursday at the university’s campus in College Station.
The news came a few days after the university issued a letter to the public acknowledging the change.

The decision to retire the TexasA&.;M name does not change the value of the institution’s academic, athletic, social and civic values, nor does it diminish the pride and commitment to excellence that have been instilled within the University of Texas for generations.”

The name is also used by other sports teams, such as the New Orleans Pelicans, Washington Capitals and Seattle Seahawks.
