The author of a New York-based sex memoir has published an exclusive new story on a website that sells the story, a first for the Times.
The book, The Meyerotw Stories, by the New York Post’s Kristen Meyer, is available online only as an excerpt.
The publisher has not released the full story, which includes the name of the New Yorker, the publication’s chief executive and editor-in-chief.
It is titled, “The New Yorker’s Story of Sex and Drugs.”
A book that describes the lives of famous people is a rare opportunity to tell a new story, said Jennifer Boudreau, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey-based publisher.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to share it with readers and to tell people that they can learn from this extraordinary story.”
The New York paper, owned by the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Pulitzer Media Group, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In the story in The New Yorker online, published Tuesday, Meyer says the publication, which has had a long relationship with the media, found a way to publish it because of her.
“When I went to New York in 2011 to cover the Olympics, the Post and I had a very good relationship,” she writes.
“But it was just too hard for me to get access to all the stories.
They didn’t have a good reputation for doing quality journalism.
So I decided to do my own story.
It was a bit like having a private pilot’s license, except I didn’t really need it.”
The book was initially published by HarperCollins in 2014 and reissued by Simon & Schuster in 2018.
The first edition sold about 300,000 copies, the publisher said in a statement.
“We’re very pleased to be able to share Kristen’s new story with our readers, and we are excited to be bringing The Meyers’ story to life online,” Simon & Shuster publisher William Jacobsen said in the statement.
“The story is a compelling and intimate account of sex and drug addiction that is based on her own experiences as a woman, a woman of substance abuse, and the women who are living with their addictions.”
A woman who declined to give her name said she was shocked by the Times’s decision to publish the story online.
“It’s such a violation of privacy,” she said.
“They’re selling the story to the New Yorkers.”
The publisher said it is working with a journalist who will help with the review process.
The story will be published as an exclusive feature on Wednesday in The Times’s news section.
